District announces 2019 Financial Aid Nights

The School District of Lee County, with the help of a local financial aid expert, is hosting several Financial Aid Nights at area schools for high school juniors and seniors and their parents.

The events will be held on:

– Oct. 17: South Fort Myers High School auditorium at 6 p.m.

– Oct. 22: Lehigh Senior High School auditorium at 6 p.m.

– Oct. 24: Dunbar High School auditorium at 6 p.m.

Families in attendance will learn about the FAFSA – Free Application for Federal Student Aid – form and steps they need to take to help their children receive financial aid from postsecondary institutions, such as colleges, community colleges, high tech centers.

Mathew Sanchez, director of Student Financial Aid at Florida SouthWestern College, will lead the discussion about the definition of financial aid, how to apply, deadlines, step-by-step instructions for completing the FAFSA, Bright Futures, state aid versus federal aid and more.

Students and parents can attend the event most convenient to them.

Red Sox scholarship applications open

The Boston Red Sox Foundation will again award 13 $5,000 scholarships in the spring to one deserving student from each of the 13 public high schools in Lee County.

Applications are open and available to local Lee County public high school seniors online at www.redsoxfoundation.org/fenway-south/flscholarship/.

Applications are due by Dec. 31.

The scholarship is for academically talented students who have shown a commitment to community service and are pursuing a two- or four- year degree at any college or university.

Scholarship funds are raised annually from proceeds of the Red Sox annual Swings for the Sox Golf Tournament. In the past seven years, the Red Sox Foundation has raised over $323,000 for local nonprofits and scholarships.
