LCEC to provide SCCF, DDWS with funding awards
LCEC announced that it will provide the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation with a $2,040 environmental funding award to support Mind Your Line, while a $2,754 award will go to the “Ding” Darling Wildlife Society-Friends of the Refuge for its second annual Merit Badge University.
Mind Your Line is a collaborative effort among conservation organizations to reduce the amount of monofilament line and fishing gear left in the environment. The LCEC funding will help the effort to construct more collection bins for discarding excess monofilament. A net gun also will be purchased with the funds, which will help safely capture injured wildlife from monofilament and fishing tackle.
As for the Merit Badge University, it is a day-long event in which local Boy Scouts and Eagle Scouts are given the opportunity to complete two merit badges pertaining to the mission of the J.N. Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge on Sanibel.
Interested organizations must meet certain criteria to be considered for an environmental funding award, including being located within LCEC service territory, funding utilized for projects/programs related to the environment and the utility industry, and having a demonstrated need for funds.
The deadlines for the 2020 award applications are March 15 and Sept. 1.
