F.I.S.H., NAMI to present ‘Understanding the Misunderstood’ seminar
F.I.S.H. of Sanibel-Captiva and the National Association on Mental Illness for Lee, Charlotte and Hendry Counties will offer a community presentation, “Understanding the Misunderstood – The Facts About Mental Illness,” on Oct. 16 from 10 a.m. to noon at The Community House on Sanibel.
The seminar will provide information about specific mental illnesses, conditions, treatment and services related to mental illness.
“Mental illnesses can affect persons of any age, race, religion or status,” NAMI Program Director Regina Britton said. “They are not the result of personal weakness, lack of character or poor upbringing. Mental illnesses are treatable.”
In consultation with local mental health experts, F.I.S.H. has developed a workshop series that will focus on various aspects of mental health and well-being. Its hope is that by providing a forum to receive more information and begin a community conversation, it can help raise awareness and reduce stigma associated with mental and behavioral wellness.
“This will be the first of our five-part series on mental health,” Program Director Kathy Y. Monroe said. “It is our hope that this journey will educate participants while discussing treatment, finding resources, sharing difficult stories and becoming responsible for our own mental health.”
