October Holiday Party, design workshops aim to provide inspiration for the coming holidays
For the second consecutive year, Floral Artistry will return to The Community House on Sanibel to offer a handful of events to kick off the holidays and provide inspiration for party planning.
The Sanibel-based florist will host two design workshops this year with Dutch Master Florist Mark Frank, owner of Mark Frank Styling. “Traditional Design” will be held on Oct. 11 at 5 p.m., followed by “Modern Design” on Oct. 12 at 1 p.m. Event tickets are $115 per workshop and space is limited.
The cost includes materials, plus entry to the October Holiday Party Showcase and Gift Market.
Set for Oct. 12 at 5 p.m., the main event will be a holiday wonderland of floral and design ideas, featuring local and island vendors and services, samplings from caterers, a demonstration by Frank, gift items for purchase and raffle giveaways. Youth groups will provide gift wrapping for a donation.
The Christmas in October tickets are $15 in advance or $20 at the door.
Jana Telecka, owner and lead designer of Floral Artistry, explained that she and her team started the events as a way to provide residents and visitors with an evening of holiday cheer and inspiration.
“The idea was to create something fun on the island, and I think we did that,” she said.
“We got lots of compliments last year,” Telecka added.
Partnering with The Community House, a portion of the proceeds will go to the facility.
The Casa Ybel Resort is serving as the sponsor.
OCTOBER HOLIDAY PARTY
For the October Holiday Party, attendees will be welcomed with a glass of champagne.
“The main idea is to get inspired and get ideas for the holidays,” she said. “It is like a showcase of floral work, and you can get ideas for holiday parties.”
As of last week, about 17 businesses had signed up to take part – double from the prior year.
“There will be many more vendors and there are different types of vendors,” Telecka said.
Some include the Paper Fig Kitchen, Bailey’s, Favi Cakes, East Fork Creek, Nick Adams Photography, Sanibel Day Spa, Floral Artistry, The Community House, Casa Ybel Resort, Sanibel Harbor Mariott, Congress Jewelers, MacIntosh Books and Paper, Nanny’s Children’s Shoppe, J.McLaughlin and more.
“People will actually be able to buy presents for Christmas or for whatever occasion,” she said.
Local Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts will offer gift wrapping.
“The donations will go to the Scouts,” Telecka said.
Frank will conduct a floral demo and discuss the upcoming holiday trends.
Items donated by participating vendors will be raffled off.
“Last year, everyone got one ticket at the door and then they could buy more,” she said.
The Community House will provide a cash bar, with the proceeds to benefit the facility.
Telecka invited the public to pick up tickets in advance or stop by.
“Get inspired and enjoy the beauty of the floral arrangements, or find presents for the upcoming holidays and book vendors,” she said. “There will be lots of things to look at and enjoy.”

For the past 20-plus years, Frank has been involved in national and international projects worldwide, representing clients in Moscow, Chicago, Kiev, Kenia, Ukraine, Portugal, New Orleans, Bogota, Switzerland, Slovenia, Italy, Quito and China, to name just a few.
His work has been in publications involving the Dutch royal family, Floriade World Floral Exhibition, Cirque du Soleil, Sesame Street, Holland Flower Promotion, World Floral Expo-Miami and Chinese Horticulture Exhibition in Qingdao and at parades in the Netherlands, Belgium, Holland and Michigan.
“There are many people on the island who like to be creative,” Telecka said.
So, Floral Artistry offered a workshop last year with Frank – and it was a sold-out success.
“Everybody had fun with it,” she said.
Because of the prior response, they increased the offerings to two workshops this time.
“We had so many people interested,” Telecka said. “We wanted to give the chance to everybody.”
Each workshop will focus on a different style of floral design, traditional and modern. During the instruction, participants will create centerpieces from fresh flowers that they can take home.
“Not everybody likes everything,” she said. “Some people are more traditional design lovers, some people are more modern. But, they will learn all the steps and they can play with it themselves.”
Refreshments will be available.
“And a few nibbles,” Telecka said.
Also, some of the pieces for the main event will be arranged and on display.
“So they will get a little sneak peek of what the Christmas show will look like,” she said.
Participants in the Oct. 12 class will have the option of leaving their creations for the evening.
“They can display their arrangements proudly on a table at the show,” Telecka said.
Each workshop can hold 20 people only, and spaces are filling up.
“Come learn something new and experience how floral design works,” she said. “There are many new techniques or one we don’t even know in the United States. There’s things to learn – get inspired.”
