Taking care of the earth
Working in partnership with Keep Lee County Beautiful, the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation organized volunteers to clean up the islands’ beaches on Sept. 21 as part of the annual Coastal Cleanup. A total of 217 volunteers from Sanibel, Captiva, Upper Captiva, Fort Myers, Cape Coral and Lehigh Acres cleared beaches and waterfronts on the islands and Upper Captiva and along the Summerlin Road shoreline leading to the Sanibel Causeway. The event lasted for about two hours and 475 pounds of trash and debris were collected and removed, including cigarette butts, construction materials, balloons, fishing line and plastic packaging, even a tire and a chair. Afterward, volunteers were offered a complimentary lunch at Doc Ford’s Rum Bar & Grille, which served as an event partner. The events were coordinated as part of the Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup.
