Captiva library presents list of activities for the month

The Captiva Memorial Library, at 11560 Chapin Lane, Captiva, is offering the following free programs for adults and youth throughout the month of October, along with the remainder of September:

ADULT PROGRAMS

– Coloring for Grown-ups

(daily during operating hours)

Researchers and art therapists alike have touted the calming effects of coloring, and adults have found this childhood activity a refreshing way to release their creativity, relieve stress and meet other participants. Coloring pages designed especially for adults, as well as colored pencils, provided.

– Checkers

(daily during operating hours)

Play classic checkers, “the game of games,” or try other versions such as Fox and Geese, Give Away, Shifting Pyramids, Corner Checkers or Goban. Instructions included. Alternatively, reverse the field and play Tic Tac Toe or Super Tic Tac Toe.

YOUTH PROGRAMS

– Sept. 25: Goodbye Summer, Hello Fall

(daily during operating hours)

Check out the book display on autumn. Have fun creating cookies and pies out of apple cinnamon playdough.

– Sept. 26: Johnny Appleseed from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Check out the book display on Johnny Appleseed and apples. Make a Johnny Appleseed puppet.

– Sept. 27-28: Apple Picking Time from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Check out the book display on apples and make an apple paper plate craft.

– Oct. 1-5: October is National Cookie Month

(daily during operating hours)

Calling all cookie lovers. There are cookie picture books on display. Make pretend cookies from playdough.

– Oct. 8-12: Cool Reptiles

(daily during operating hours)

Read about slithery snakes, lizards and other reptiles. There are reptile books on display. Enjoy making a frilled lizard paper craft.

– Oct. 15-19: Pasta for Everyone

(daily during operating hours)

We love pasta at the library. Picture books on pasta will be on display. Make a fish craft with pasta.

– Oct. 22-26: Friendly Monsters

(daily during operating hours)

Friendly monsters and other non-scary creatures are featured in this week’s book display. Make monsters out of toilet paper tubes.

– Oct. 29-31: Nocturnal Animals

(daily during operating hours)

See a book display about nocturnal animals. Play in the sensory bin with pretend black bow tie pasta bats and orange rice. Enjoy making hanging paper bats.

Stop by the Captiva Memorial Library to read a favorite magazine or newspaper; to discover a good book, DVD, or music CD; to color or create a craft; to do a puzzle; or to play a game of checkers.

The Captiva Memorial Library is open Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Wednesday from noon to 8 p.m., Thursday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information about a program or to register, call the library at 239-533-4890.
