By Staff | Sep 23, 2019

Sanibel’s Community Housing and Resources will begin a year-long celebration of the organization’s fortieth anniversary on Oct. 2 beginning at 5 p.m. with an “Evening at Island Cinema.”

Sponsored by Bailey’s General Store, it will take place at the Island Cinema. Prior to the featured movie, guests will enjoy hors d’oeuvres and refreshments, including wine and beer. The film kicks off at 6 p.m., starting with a short video presentation by CHR highlighting the history of the non-profit.

The featured movie is “The Art of Racing in the Rain,” starring Kevin Costner, Amanda Seyfried, Milo Ventimiglia and a lovable golden retriever. Based on a New York Times best-selling book, the movie tells the story of Denny Swift, an aspiring Formula One race car driver, and his dog, Enzo. Through his bond with his owner, Enzo learns that the techniques needed on the racetrack can also be used to successfully navigate the journey of life.

Guests can enjoy popcorn and soda throughout the movie, also provided by Bailey’s.

Tickets are $40 each, with all proceeds benefiting CHR.

Longtime CHR supporters and owners of Bailey’s, Calli and Bailie Johnson, along with CHR Board Member Lena Brown, have been working closely to coordinate festivities for the fun theater night.

“We thought this would be a great way to kick off the year-long celebration of CHR’s fortieth,” Brown, who is also a member of the Fortieth Anniversary Committee, said.

The committee was tasked with creating a program commemorating the 40 years that CHR has been helping island residents. Along with CHR Executive Director Melissa Rice, the 10-member volunteer group has four events planned. There is also an Eco Tour at the Sanibel Island Golf Club on Nov. 30, Captiva Crawl including three dining establishments on Jan. 10 and Rauschenberg Estate Tour in April.
