Co-owner of Malia, Spoondrift to speak at ABWA meeting
The Sanibel Captiva Charter Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association will host its monthly luncheon on Aug. 27 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Sundial Beach Resort & Spa.
The guest speaker is Kathy Samson, co-owner of Malia Island Fusion Cuisine and Spoondrift Island Bowls and owner of K&J Samson Inc., a full-service advertising agency. She will discuss “Do What You Love – Love What You Do,” discussing steps everyone can take toward workplace happiness.
“Putting your heart and soul into what you do is the secret to enjoying your work,” Samson said. “I can’t imagine working any other way.”
Samson built her career at the Gannett Company and was part of the team that launched USA TODAY. She was a key player in the paper’s growth as worldwide advertising director and a member of the strategy team that set the company’s goals. Samson went on to run the Michigan-based GreenStreet Marketing agency, winning numerous creative awards and serving a portfolio of 70 clients, including Kellogg’s cereal brands.
“I’ve loved the experiences I’ve had in my life,” she said.
When asked how journalism and advertising brought her to open two restaurants on a barrier island, Samson replied, “It’s simple, but it’s complicated.”
“Kathy broke many glass ceilings paving the way for women in publishing and advertising over the course of her career,” ABWA chapter President Gloria Garrett said. “Through all those challenges, she had fun. We can all learn from her story.”
The chapter meets on the fourth Tuesday of the month at the Sundial Beach Resort & Spa, at 1451 Middle Gulf Drive, Sanibel. Networking starts at 11:30 a.m., with lunch and a speaker from noon to 1 p.m. The cost for lunch is $25 per person. The meetings are open to the public.
