More than mental illness needs addressing

By Staff | Aug 20, 2019

To the editor:

I agree that mental illness is a huge factor in the gun violence in our country, but on the other hand you have to have a mental problem to want to kill or cause bodily harm to another human being.

If an individual with a mental illness did not have access to an assault rife, he would not be able to kill or injury 37 people in 32 seconds. A hand gun does not perform that rapidly and the victims have a chance to protect themselves and others around them.

Assault rifles are weapons of war and have no business in our society. First get rid of the assault rifles, then start programs to work with the mentally ill and do extensive back ground checks periodically on all gun owners.
