(Editor’s note: First poem written after quintuple by-pass heart surgery.)

I shut my eyes –

Opened them to see –

Mortality had toppled

down on me –

Boulder by boulder

Remembrance and ruin –

In piles of rubble

About my body strewn –

Hoses and tubes

In and out of me

Devices and monitors

My new reality –

Anesthesia fog

And waking sleep –

World dripping dread

Of pulse and beep –

But treasured still –

The salvaged find

Of shards of lifetime

Left behind

Raised up from ashes

A tower apart –

A shining city

For the mended heart –
