KAYLA SCHUNEMAN Team Fuego claimed the championship title during the season-ending tournament on Aug. 1 for the city's Adult 3-on-3 Basketball League, beating team Next Level Church with a score of 48-47.

Marking its fourth year, the city of Sanibel’s Adult 3-on-3 Basketball League wrapped up with the season-ending tournament on Aug. 1, with team Fuego laying claim to the championship title.

The playoff and final games took place at the Sanibel Recreation Center.

“All the teams played hard,” Recreation Services Supervisor Char Durand said.

She added that the early games set the tone, with the teams keeping pace with one another.

“The Sanibel Clippers and the Bissell Boys,” Durand said. “The final spread ended up being about six (points), but it was a nail biter.”

KAYLA SCHUNEMAN Team Next Level Church came in second place in the Aug. 1 season-ending tourney.

In the championship game, Fuego faced off against team Next Level Church.

“It was close the whole way,” she said, adding that by halftime Next Level Church was up by about five points. “With two-pointers and one-pointers, it’s not a lot.”

Durand reported that with about five minutes left to go, there were several lead changes.

“It was just highly competitive,” she said about the entire championship game. “The talent and athleticism was probably at a level that we hadn’t seen out here yet.”

The final score was 48-47, with Next Level Church coming in at second place.

The Sanibel Clippers and the Bissell Boys fought it out on the court for third and fourth.

With a final score of 84-55, the Sanibel Clippers came out on top.

“Bissell Boys had one of their top players leave a little earlier, so there was a big disparity,” Durand said. “Those two teams are pretty evenly matched, even though the final game didn’t show it.”

She reported that overall, the evening went smoothly.

“The guys were very enthusiastic, ready to play,” Durand said. “It was just a great night of basketball.”

The final scores from the games were:

– Tri-Color vs. Everybody Loves Draymond (23-37)

– Sanibel Clippers vs. Bissell Boys (38-44)

– Tropics vs. Next Level Church (23-46)

– Bissell Boys vs. Fuego (32-58)

– Tri-color vs. Tropics (0-15)

– Tropics vs. Bissell Boys (25-32)

– Everybody Loves Draymond vs. Next Level Church (22-34)

– Sanibel Clippers vs. Everybody Loves Draymond (53-33)

– Bissell Boys vs. Sanibel Clippers (51-84)

– Fuego vs. Next Level Church (48-47)

The team M.T.X.E. did not take part in the tournament.

“We had eight teams last year,” she said of the season. “We had eight teams again this year.”

While some of the previously registered teams rotated players or changed team names for this year, there were two completely new ones that participated – the Sanibel Clippers and the Tropics.

“They had never played before,” Durand said.

She reported that both had a great time and are looking forward to next year.

Durand noted that spectators came out to root on the players.

“Teams brought their families to watch. Some people in the rec center would come over cause you could see it through the weight room,” she said. “It was great to see our gym full and active.”

“Thank you to the public for coming out and supporting it,” Durand added.

The league is sponsored by Whitney’s Bait & Tackle, which covers the uniforms and trophies.

“They’ve sponsored it every year,” she said, adding that the teams do not have to worry about paying for their own uniforms, which is amazing. “They look organized and are very appreciative of it.”

Registrations for next year’s league will open in May.

“Before that we always have a 3-on-3 basketball tournament in February,” Durand said.

“So look for that,” she added.
