North Fort Myers man dies in crash in Collier County
A North Fort Myers man was killed in an afternoon traffic crash Tuesday in Collier County. Anthony Mankus, 77, died in the crash, which occurred at 4:48 p.m. at the intersection of Everglades Boulevard, N., and 56th Avenue.
According to a report from the Florida Highway Patrol, Mankus, driving a 2011 Chevy Impala, was westbound on 56th Avenue when he came to a stop at the stop sign at Everglades Boulevard. As he attempted to continue through the intersection, Mankus pulled out into the path of a 1997 Peterbilt 379 tractor trailer truck driven by Heriberto Sosa, 49, of Lehigh Acres, which was northbound on Everglades Boulevard. The tractor trailer then struck the left side of the Impala.
Mankus was transported to Naples Community Hospital where he was pronounced deceased. Sosa was uninjured in the crash.
FHP reported that the accident remains under investigation.
