Progressive Club presents guest speaker for meeting

The Progressive Club of the Islands will host its monthly meeting on July 18 at 7 p.m. at the Sanibel Public Library with guest speaker Don Eslick, chair of the non-partisan group called Lee Future.

He will discuss “Before it’s too late: shaping the future of Lee County.”

Eslick previously served as the founding chairman of the Estero Council of Community Leaders from 2002-2011, and later as interim chairman. Over the last l8 years, he has served Lee County government and civic groups on boards and advisory committees, including Lee County Smart Growth, Lee County Charter Review, Lee County Density Reduction/Groundwater Resource Advisory and Conservancy of Southwest Florida. Eslick was awarded the Lee County Citizen of the Year in 2005.

For over a decade, he served as assistant State Superintendent of Schools, assistant Illinois State Comptroller and staff director for the Speaker of the Illinois House of Representatives. While with the speaker, Eslick was responsible for developing major pieces of legislation, including the Illinois Development Finance Authority to finance business and industrial development.

Following a decade in public finance, he founded Public Finance Associates in 1993 and assumed the executor director position at the Illinois Tax Increment Association. Eslick earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from Purdue University, master’s degree from the University of Chicago, and a doctorate in economics at the University of Illinois.

The meeting is free and open to the public.
