Back-to-school supplies drive organized by F.I.S.H.
With just over one month to go before students return to school, F.I.S.H. of Sanibel-Captiva is gearing up for its annual Back-to-School Supplies Drive in July.
Starting school with the proper school supplies promotes learning and helps keep students engaged in school.
“For families, especially those with more than one child, back-to-school shopping expenses can become quite large,” Program Director Kathy Y. Monroe said. “We have learned that many parents struggle to pay for school supplies along with the additional cash donations requested for reams of paper, craft supplies, planners and more. With it being low season, many parents are not working as much which can become financially challenging.”
F.I.S.H. is asking the community for help in making school a better place for students and teachers by donating school supplies. From July 8-22, supplies may be dropped off at Bailey’s General Store in the bin near the registers, CVS on Palm Ridge Road or the FISH Walk-In Center. Cash donations will also be accepted at F.I.S.H., where people can designate their donation toward the school supplies drive.
Through partnerships with Friends Who Care and the Captiva Chapel by the Sea, Target gift cards and undergarments will be included when supplies are distributed. With community support, F.I.S.H. can help defray the expense of back-to-school clothing and supplies for 60 students in kindergarten through 12th grade.

“It feels like students need more and more supplies these days, and as a mother of two children, it becomes costly. And, the older they get, the more expensive school tools and computer subscriptions seem to become. I never want my kids to go without, especially when it comes to educational supplies,” one island parent with two children attending The Sanibel School said. “The restaurant where I work was slower than usual this season, and I didn’t make as much from shifts and tips as I normally do. When I heard F.I.S.H. had a school supply assistance program for qualified households, I was so grateful.”
“Our hope is that every child has exactly what they need to begin the school year,” F.I.S.H. President Maggi Feiner said. “We want our future leaders to have the necessary tools to excel, and it starts with the supplies; it really matters. We are so thankful for our partnerships with Captiva Chapel-by-the-Sea, Friends Who Care, and the island community who are so thoughtful in supporting our island youth. Thank you in advance for your support.”
