Progressive Club presents guest speakers for meeting
The Progressive Club of the Islands will host its monthly meeting on June 20, with guest speakers Henry Burden and Chris Krupic – two union organizers.
They will discuss “The Importance and Presence of Unions in Lee County.”
Burden spent 10 years as an organizer, business representative and regional director of the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union in Delaware, Southern Pennsylvania and northeast Maryland. He bargained labor contracts in a five-state area, including national best contracts for 7,000 poultry industry employees. Burden was a campaign volunteer for the Biden senatorial campaign and John Kerry presidential campaign. He ran the Voter Protection Program for the 2018 mid-term elections and oversaw the recount at the Lee County board of directors.
Krupic grew up in Fort Myers and graduated from Lehigh Senior High School. Working for a cabinet shop, he soon decided after the economy changed in 2007 to find a position not dependent on the economy. Hired in 2012 to work for the Sanibel Island Water Association, Krupic noted a change in leadership and helped to organize the workers. The NLRB held a vote, and all qualified personnel voted unanimously to bring in the union. This past year, he spent time in Tallahassee with the Working Family Lobby Corps to learn how local politics affect workers.
A panel discussion will give both speakers the chance to share their experiences and status of unions in Lee County. They will answer questions about local labor union activity and employee conditions.
The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. in the lower level meeting room at the Sanibel Public Library.
It is free and open to the public.
