Poetic License: ‘I’m Looking Over a Snowy Plover’

By Staff | Jun 11, 2019

Joe Pacheco

(To the tune of “I’m Looking Over a Four-leaf Clover”)

I’m looking over a snowy plover

Someone overlooked before.

One mound of feathers is all that remains,

Along with the shells and some tiny blood stains.

No need explaining, the birds remaining

Are fewer than there were before,

I’m looking over a snowy plover

Someone overlooked before.

Her journey over, the two-ounce rover

Will fill up her nest no more,

Birders will search on the sand in vain,

She’s washed away with red algae and rain.

No need explaining, the seaweed remaining

Is higher than it was before,

I’m looking over a snowy plover

Someone overlooked before.

Lord God Jehovah created the plover

For us to admire and adore,

Gators and no-see-ums, part of His plan,

Together with jellyfish, panthers and Man.

But when souls have risen from bodily prison

And we’re all on that beautiful shore,

I’ll be looking over at that snowy plover

Someone overlooked before.
