Hunt for silver king draws Texas anglers
An all-female group recently spent a week on-island with one thing in mind – catching tarpon.
Nine members of the Texas Lady Anglers, an organization dedicated to enhancing the fishing experience for women of all skill levels, traveled to Captiva for the first time for the group’s first-ever tarpon trip. Staying from May 18-22, the participating anglers ranged in age from 15 up to 74.
“Fishing doesn’t discriminate,” Patricia Picco, co-founder with Patti Polensky, said.
She described Captiva as a “slice of paradise that is hard to match.”
“From the weather, the feel and beauty of the island, the people and hospitality, and to of course the fishing – this location is ideal,” Picco said.
The group stayed at Jensen’s Twin Palm Cottages & Marina.
“Jensen’s cottages were the perfect place to set up as our base. The staff there is welcoming and accommodating,” the organization shared on its website’s blog following the trip. “And every day that we returned from our adventures, they joined us in celebrating.”
And the anglers had a lot to celebrate, as each member hooked at least one tarpon.
“Some ladies caught multiple tarpon,” Picco said, noting that the catches ranged in weight from 80 pounds to 200 pounds.
The group fished with Tenacity Guide Service, based out of Bokeelia.
“And what guides we had! Tenacity is amazing!” the organization shared on its blog. “If you are looking for a service to put you on fish, and do so with class, then this is your team.”
While tarpon was the target, the anglers hooked others species along the way.
“We also caught a variety of shark species, which is fun. And many ladies caught snook,” Picco said, noting that the snook catches ranged in length from 28 inches to just over 35 inches.
“All ladies on the trip caught personal best,” she added. “Me personally, I caught my personal best of 160 pounds – not just tarpon, but overall.”
For the participants, it was a trip to remember – and relive.
“In the 15 years that TLA (Texas Lady Anglers) has been an organization, this is the first group trip where every single lady voted unanimously to come back again,” Picco said. “Typically, the ladies like to take trips to different places – but Captiva is now going to be a standard trip for us.”
“We can’t thank Tenacity Guide Service and Jensen’s enough for making this a trip of a lifetime. So much so that we have already scheduled next year’s trip and have sold it out in less than 48 hours,” she added. “Look out for us next May!”
