The celebration and presentation of awards for the Earth Day song, poem and coloring contests took place on May 10 at The Sanibel School, where four of the five winners are students.

The Sanibel Recreation Center and the J.N “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge sponsored the contest for students in kindergarten through eighth grade. Prizes were provided by the refuge.

The winner of the poem contest is fourth-grader Sammy Wells, and the winner of the song contest is seventh-grader Adam Kolar. The coloring contest winners are second-grader Kayla Cavanaugh in first place, fourth-grader Gia Lackenby in second place and third-grader Karmindy Schafer in third place.

Earth Day is a worldwide celebration to show support for environmental protection.
