A North Fort Myers resident has died from injuries suffered in an April accident in Cape Coral.

According to a report from the Cape Coral Police Department. Ralph A. Hicks, 93, of 242 Shurb Lane, North Fort Myers, passed away Thursday, May 9, in Hospice care. Hicks was a passenger in a 2018 Hyundai Tucson SUV involved in a crash at Northeast Pine Island Road and Hibiscus Drive shortly after noon on April 2.

The Cape police report indicates that the accident occurred when the Tucson was traveling south on Hibiscus Drive, exiting the parking lot of BJ’s at 1929 N.E. Pine Island Road. As the Tucson travelled south across the westbound lanes of Pine Island Road, it proceeded into the path of a 2015 GMC Sierra pickup truck, which was westbound on Pine Island Road and attempting to turn left into the eastbound lanes of Pine Island Road. The Sierra struck the rear passenger door of the Tucson, which rotated counterclockwise with the front of the Tucson striking the driver’s side of the pickup.

Both the driver and the passenger of the Tucson were injured in the crash and both were transported to Lee Memorial Hospital, police said. Neither the driver or the passenger of the Sierra were injured.

The driver of the Tucson was cited for failing to yield the right of way.

According to the CCPD, there have now been 8 traffic fatalities in the city in 2019.
