Resident Gari Lewis, also known as the “Sanibel Seamstress,” was recently inspired to create a dress out of garbage and trash that she found on the shore outside of her home in The Dunes on Sanibel. She reported that it is constructed out of garbage bags and plastic bags, Mylar foil balloons, monofilament fishing line, bottle caps and corks, flip top can openers, a plastic lighter, fishing and fly fishing lures, fish netting, plastic package strapping, fishing bobbers and floats, plastic straws, and repurposed fabric. With a degree in fashion design, Lewis has been sewing professionally for 40 years and does all sorts of sewing and alterations on the island.
