Offshore Sailing School founder and Chairman Steve Colgate was honored to participate with other sailors from the infamous 1979 Fastnet Race as they recently spoke to members of the New York Yacht Club about their experience. Force 10 gales whipped up 50-foot waves to turn the 605-mile Fastnet yacht race into a terrifying event for 2,500 sailors aboard some 300 yachts. More than one-third of the yachts were knocked over until their masts were parallel to the water and one-quarter of them capsized completely; 15 sailors perished. It was the biggest rescue operation launched by United Kingdom authorities since World War II. Celebrating its 55th anniversary this year, the Offshore Sailing School has a location at the South Seas Island Resort. For more information, visit www.offshoresailing.com.
