Cape man charged in double-fatal accident
Cape Coral Police have made an arrest in a Monday night crash on Pine Island Road that sent one to the hospital and left two dead.
William Frederick Bohl, 35, of 2614 Gleason Parkway, Cape Coral, has been charged with two counts of DUI manslaughter and DUI damage to property for his involvement in the accident.
Killed in the accident were Kevin Wayne Hamm, 46, and Christian Wayne Hamm, 20, both of 733 N.W. 37th Place, Cape Coral.
According to the Cape police report, on April 29, at around 10:20 p.m., officers responded to a call for service in reference to a two vehicle roll-over traffic crash at the 1600 block of Southwest Pine Island Road.
Police determined that the accident occurred when a 2005 gold Dodge Ram 1500 pickup truck, driven by Bohl, was traveling the wrong way — east — in the westbound lane of Pine Island Road when it collided with a 2005 gray Dodge Grand Caravan, driven by Kevin Hamm.
Before impact, the report indicates that both vehicles swerved towards the center median of Pine Island Road to avoid the crash, but the front driver’s side of the Ram impacted the front passenger side of the Caravan.
The Ram came to final rest facing southwest in the inside westbound travel lane of Pine Island Road. After impact, the Caravan rolled over coming to rest on its roof. in the median.
Bohl was transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Kevin Hamm suffered fatal injuries in the crash, and Christian Hamm suffered life-threatening injuries and was trauma alerted to Lee Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced deceased, police said.
The CCPD police report said indicators of impairment were observed at the scene for Hamm. Further investigation determined that he was impaired at the time of the crash, police said, and after he was released from Lee Memorial Hospital, he was placed under arrest.
The CCPD?reports that there have now been traffic fatalities in the city in 2019.
