Annual Ride of Silence aims to raise awareness
Matzaluna Italian Restaurant, in conjunction with the Sanibel Bike Club and Billy’s Bikes, will host the annual “Ride of Silence” on May 15 starting from the restaurant, at 1200 Periwinkle Way, Sanibel.
Riders are encouraged to arrive for waiver signing and equipment check by 6:45 p.m.
The ride will begin at 7 p.m. and cross over the first two bridges of the Sanibel Causeway, take the turnaround under the main span and return to Matzaluna Italian Restaurant.
The restaurant will provide discounted food and drink for riders.
Since 2008, the Sanibel Bike Club has hosted a local “Ride of Silence” to honor fellow cyclists who have been killed or injured in cycling accidents and to raise awareness that everyone should share the road. The Ride of Silence is a worldwide event that takes place on the third Wednesday of each May.
Club members, friends, neighbors and the public are invited to ride in this short, silent, slow ride.
Helmets are required for the ride, plus front and tail lights for those riding home after dinner.
The initial Ride of Silence in 2003 in Dallas, Texas, drew 1,000 cyclists in response to the death of Larry Schwartz by a school bus mirror earlier that same month.
