Demolition work complete at BIG ARTS
As of April 4, demolition of the old BIG ARTS building on Sanibel had been completed.
Construction now begins on a project that is expected to be finished in 2020.
Prior to demolishing the building, vegetation removal was conducted. The landscape plan included removing exotics and relocating current vegetation, as well as new mitigated landscape material, back into the new plaza and parking lot design. It celebrates the preserved, replanted native specimens.
All plantings will be 100 percent native. BIG ARTS worked closely with the city to make sure the landscape plan conforms to Sanibel’s required vegetation codes and is approved by the Planning and Natural Resources departments. Any vegetation that does not survive relocation back to the site will be will be mitigated at the 3:1 and 1:1 ratios as approved by the Natural Resources Department.
The new building was designed purposely with wide windows to the outside world to herald the natural beauty of the islands. BIG ARTS will have the lush landscape it has so enjoyed throughout the years.
