Shirlene Grasgreen, 91, a beloved member of the Sanibel community for more than 40 years died Wednesday, March 6, 2019. She leaves behind her loving son Ira, family and many friends.
Shirlene was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio. She was married to her husband Marty in 1949. The Grasgreens began visiting Sanibel in 1969 and moved to the island from East Brunswick, New Jersey in 1979.
For more than 30 years she held a number of positions at The Island Reporter including front desk and office/circulation manager. Shirlene enjoyed chatting with islanders as she processed subscriptions along with presenting the ever-popular annual Ikki posters. All who knew her were touched by her wit, love, and kindness.
Shirlene could often be found on her couch reading voraciously with her Kindle. She loved flowers of all kinds, especially sunflowers, and cherished nature’s beauty from botanical gardens to majestic landscapes. Her smile was a ray of sunshine to everyone she met.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Martin Grasgreen; her brother, Stan Hirshman; and her parents, Abe and Lilly Hirshman. She is survived by her son, Ira; and her nieces, Allie (CJ) Ciaramella and Ariana Grasgreen.
A private graveside service was held Friday, March 8 at Fort Myers Memorial Gardens. A Celebration of Life will be held in early December and information will be forthcoming.
