Island Democratic Club changes name, broadens mission
The Democratic Club of the Islands announced that it has changed its name to the Progressive Club of the Islands, after a majority of the club’s members voted for the change at the February meeting.
The purpose is to strengthen progressive ideals and principles and to broaden the tent to include independents and progressive thinkers of every type. The intent is to pull together diverse elements of the democratic society, to unify and support active interest in political and governmental affairs, to support members in engaging in campaigns, and to promote environmental and social justice issues as they specifically impact the islands and surrounding communities.
The Progressive Club of the Islands will continue to support Democratic candidates for office, as well as others who advocate progressive ideas and principles.
Free and open to the public, the club will hold its monthly meeting on March 21 at 7 p.m. at The Community House, at 2l73 Periwinkle Way, Sanibel. Guest speaker Nirupa Netram, an immigration program officer at the Southwest Florida Foundation, will speak on the plight of area immigrants.
Netram earned a Bachelor of Business Administration from Stetson University and Juris Doctorate from Stetson University College of Law. Admitted to the Florida Bar in 1998, she has been a certified circuit civil mediator since 2014. Netram can practice law in Florida, the United States District Court’s Middle District of Florida and United States Supreme Court.
