On March 4, around 12:53 p.m., Cape Coral Police Officer Maduro conducted a traffic stop on a red Toyota for the driver not wearing a seatbelt.

According to a report from the CCPD, Maduro got behind the Toyota and turned on his patrol vehicle emergency lights just east of Santa Barbara Boulevard at about the 100 block Cape Coral Parkway, East. The Toyota continued traveling east, maintaining the same rate of speed, and then made a right turn onto Triton Court, West, where it continued until coming to final stop in front of 4824 Triton Court, West. Once the vehicle stopped, police reported, a white male driver immediately exited the vehicle and took off running. Maduro began a foot pursuit while giving lawful commands for the male subject to stop. The male subject jumped into a nearby canal, where he swam towards the west, continuing to ignore lawful commands to stop. The male got out of the canal and continued running towards Sorrento Court.

Maduro then ran back to the vehicle, reports indicate, where he found the female passenger, Ashley Lynn Shirley, 25, of 4913 Vincennes St., Cape Coral, standing outside the vehicle. Maduro detained Shirley in handcuffs for the investigation.

While conducting an area check near the vehicle, CCPD Sgt. Causer located a green plastic pencil container in a nearby storm drain, containing two syringes, a spoon with a piece of cotton swab, alcohol swabs, several cotton swabs and a piece of paper towel. Police reported the case also contained a small clear plastic container with a clear bag of methamphetamine and a clear bag of brown heroin.

Shirley was arrested and charged with possession of methamphetamine, possession of heroin, possession of drug paraphernalia, resisting law enforcement without violence and permit unauthorized person to fdrive.

She was later transferred to Lee County Jail.

The investigation into the male is ongoing.
