Civil Rights in the Sunshine State

The Sanibel Community Association and Circle of Community Leadership will present the “Civil Rights in the Sunshine State” exhibit now to Feb. 11. Developed by the Florida Museum of History in 2014 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act, in collaboration with universities, organizations and individuals, it explores the history of the Civil Rights movement in Florida through pictures, graphs and narratives to educate visitors about the state’s contributions to the movement. Many of the photos are from the State Archives of Florida. There are also videos of civil rights leaders, like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Patricia Stephens Due, Theodore Gibson and the Rev. C. K. Steele.

Colorful Sips

Sissi Janku will host a beginners-to-advanced acrylic painting class today, Feb. 6, from 7 to 9 p.m. Bring your own snacks and beverages. Cost is $50 for members and $60 for non-members.

Hands-on Cooking

Resident Chef Jarred Harris will teach a hands-on cooking class on Feb. 11 from 10 a.m. to noon. The menu will feature: spiced eggplant caviar and crispy flat bread, chargrilled vegetable pithivier (French puff pastry cake), and chocolate Truffles and chocolate-covered strawberries. Cost is $50 for members and $60 for guests.

Dine and Design Workshop

A Dine and Design Workshop will take place on Feb. 18 from noon to 2 p.m. Resident Chef Jarred Harris will prepare lunch, followed by a workshop with the Sanibel design team of Decorating Den Interiors. The topic will be “Down Sizing, Right Sizing – Adventures in Life!” Bring a photo of your design challenge and the staff will offer solutions. There will also be door prizes and studio sample displays. Cost is $30. Registration required by Feb. 11.

Joyful Living

Jenny Li Ciccone will host her series, “Emotional Freedom Techniques Tapping,” on Feb. 12 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Cost is $30 for members and $35 for guests.

Cooking Demo

Resident Chef Jarred Harris will host a cooking demonstration on Feb. 14 from 4 to 6 p.m. The menu will feature: pear and watercress salad with candied walnuts and sherry vinaigrette, grilled cauliflower and mushroom steaks with spinach leeks and roasted peppers, and coconut and lime creme brulee. Cost is $35 for members and $50 for guests.

Community Interests Speaker Series

The next program in the Community Interests Speaker Series, “Climb Aboard the Holiday Train,” will be held on Feb. 18 at 7 p.m. Presenter Danny Hussey, technology manager at the Sanibel Public Library, will talk about 3-D printing, virtual reality and creating eBooks. The presentation aims to promote 21st Century literacies and engage attendees with cutting-edge technologies. A $5 donation is suggested.

Fashion Show and Luncheon

Featuring fashions from stores at Periwinkle Place, a Fashion Show and Luncheon will be held on Feb. 22 at noon. Resident Chef Jarred Harris will prepare the menu: carrot coriander soup, Mediterranean chicken salad, fresh baked bread with olive oil and Parmesan, and variety of desserts. There will also be a speciality cocktail. Cost is $45 for members and $50 for guests. Deadline for tickets is Feb. 19.

Cooking Demo

Resident Chef Jarred Harris will host a cooking demonstration on Feb. 21 from 4 to 6 p.m. The menu will feature: vichyssoise (chilled potato and leek soup), vegetable haggis, and hazelnut and honey pie. Cost is $35 for members and $50 for guests.

Maksin/Gonzales

The Gulf Coast Symphony and Sanibel Community Association will present celloist Ian Maskin and Miami-based guitarist Michael Gonzalez on Feb. 25 at 7 p.m. A fusion of music, the evening will span a variety of genres – jazz, blues, flamenco, rock, R&B and world music – blending many styles together using cello as the common denominator. Alcoholic beverages available for purchase. Tickets are $35.

Sanibel Captiva Trust Company

The Sanibel Captiva Trust Company will host speaker Craig Hersch on “Why Selecting a Trustee Matters” on Feb. 26 at 9:30 a.m. Reservations required by calling Frances Steger at 239-472-8300.

Kids Cooking

Kids Cooking is held on the first Monday of each month, except March, from October through May from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. Resident Chief Jarred Harris will teach fundamental nutritional cooking skills and help students develop basic kitchen awareness and food preparation. The culturally-based menus will stress healthy and nutritious whole foods. Students will make the items, then sit down for a meal together. Cost is $50 per class; some scholarships will be available due to sponsorships by the Rotary and Kiwanis clubs and private citizens. Prepaid registration with required paperwork is encouraged. The following class menus are planned:

– March 1: Caribbean bean soup, curried chicken and roti, pineapple-glazed fish, coconut and vegetable stew, and banana fritters and honey

– April 1: Vegetable quesadillas, chicken tamales, fish tacos, homemade salsa and guacamole, and fried ice cream and churros

– May 6: Surprise menu

The topic will be “Wonderful World of Window Treatments.” Bring a photo of your design challenge and the staff will offer solutions. There will also be door prizes and studio sample displays. Cost is $30. Registration required by March 11.

The Community House is selling honey harvested from its hive, along with other products made by Resident Chef Jarred Harris.
