Captiva Island Art Walk set at South Seas
The company that brings the seasonal farmers markets to Sanibel and Captiva, as well as others throughout Lee County, will present its first-ever art-centered event for the islands.
Organized by Local Roots – co-owned by islanders Jean Baer and Betsy Ventura – and hosted by South Seas Island Resort, the Captiva Island Art Walk will take place on Dec. 28 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the resort. The event will feature an array of local crafters and artisans, along with their products.
The women explained that they feature art-related vendors at their markets, but there is usually a limited number compared to the typical produce and staple booths. Because of this, they always wanted to do an art show of sorts featuring just crafters and artisans to help support the small businesses.
“It was just to do a special event during a time when there’s a lot of visitors to the islands,” Ventura said, adding that vacationers and residents can pick up island-themed mementos and keepsakes.
The art walk also leads into the kick off of the Captiva Island Farmers Market on Jan. 1.
There will be approximately 30 vendors, which will also include food artisans.
Ventura explained that some of the food artisans in attendance include guacamole made fresh onsite, handmade baked goods and She Bakes Cheesecakes, along with the BuddhaBlends Food Truck.
“They specialize in avocado toast, smoothies and acai bowls,” she said.
As for the non-edible products, shoppers will find handwoven bags, boho hair bands, hand-painted beach scenes that can be personalized, infused glass jewelry, upcycled artwork and photography. There will also be sterling silver and gemstone jewelry, pottery, candles, painted furniture and glassware.
Other vendors will showcase hand-loomed Tunisian towels and bags, handmade cards, hand-blocked island clothing, tie-dye apparel, aromatherapy bracelets and more, even bromeliads and air plants.
Limited parking is available on site; alternative modes of transportation are suggested.
The event is pet-friendly, so owners are welcome to bring them.
The women invited the public to stop by and check it out.
“It’s a fun entertaining event for the visitors and residents on the island,” Ventura said.
“And it’s another event to go to during the holidays,” she added.
