Sounds of the Season returns to North Fort Myers High

By Staff | Dec 12, 2018

For the past several years, the North Fort Myers High School band has put on a holiday event that has served as its biggest fundraiser and as a way to really get the community into the Christmas spirit.

On Friday, Dec. 14, at 6:30 p.m., the North Fort Myers High School music department will put on its fourth-annual “Sounds of the Season” event in the school’s courtyard. The event will feature food and, of course, Christmas classics and more.

Sara Johnson, band director, said the idea was to provide a unique experience for the holiday concerts that nearly every school band program provides. Each year, the event has become more and more successful.

“We wanted ours to stand apart from the rest. We do it outside in the courtyard, which is decorated for the season, feature four of our concert bands, a jazz band and a few kids put on small ensembles,” Johnson said.

Among those to perform will be the junior varsity and Red Knight Jazz bands, the general band, concert band, symphonic band and wind ensemble, with the best performing solo or small ensemble pieces.

Carabba’s will provide the food, which will include chicken marsala, pasta, salad, bread and a huge dessert table, which Johnson said will provide a great dining experience, while supporting the band program.

There will also be giveaways donated by local shops for decorations for the holidays.

Last year’s event brought in more than 350 people and raised about $6,000, which seems like a lot until you realize how much some of these instruments cost, particularly brass.

“That kind of money doesn’t go very far in the band world. You end up spending it on one instrument. A new tuba costs $7,000, so it’s a struggle when you have to buy new equipment for these kids,” Johnson said. “We want to give these kids the best experience, so the more funds we can raise, the better off we are.”

Tickets are still available. Tickets are $25 and people are encouraged to arrive early to get the best tables.

And the weather? Early forecasts predicted cloudy, cool conditions.
