Decked out in holiday decor
For the 12th consecutive year, the Sanibel Lighthouse and Light Keepers Cottages have been decorated with holiday garland, bows and wreaths by the employees of the Department of Community Services. Built in 1884, the lighthouse is an enduring symbol of the island community and world-recognized icon. It was placed on the National Register of Historical Places in 1974. In 2010, ownership of the lighthouse, two cottages and 44.7 acres were transferred to the city by the federal government. As a holiday gift to the community, city staff places the green garland and red bows upon the lighthouse. Additionally, both of the adjacent cottages have been decorated with garland, bows and wreaths for the holiday season. The decorations will remain on the lighthouse and cottages until Jan. 9.
