Applications sought for Young Women in Public Affairs Award
The Zonta Club of Sanibel-Captiva is looking for high school teachers – or their students – to recommend young women for a special recognition that carries prestige and a cash award.
The Young Women in Public Affairs Award was established by Zonta International to address a significant disparity: the representation of women in legislature. In 1995, the global average was about 11 percent. By July 2017, it had reached 23.5 percent. While the growth is impressive, many barriers remain in place in regard to women’s political participation and gender parity around the globe.
The YWPA program emphasizes that women should have equal participation in decision-making processes and is based on empowerment being most effective when started at a young age.
The Zonta Club of Sanibel-Captiva is seeking candidates for the award and will present a $1,000 scholarship to the recipient. The winning application will also be passed along to compete at Zonta’s regional and district levels for possible additional honors and awards.
“Public Affairs” refers to all aspects of community life where decisions are made about issues that relate to and affect the communities in which people work and live. Likely candidates are Lee County students ages 16-19 as of April 1, 2019, who demonstrate superior leadership skills and a commitment to public service and civic causes, along with active volunteerism, volunteer leadership achievements and experience in local government, student government or workplace leadership.
