St. Michael & All Angels Episcopal Church will celebrate the beginning of Advent with a traditional Lessons and Carols Service on Dec. 5 at 6 p.m. in the Sanctuary, at 2304 Periwinkle Way, Sanibel.

A preparation for Christmas, it will consist of seasonal readings, hymns and special music.

The Parish Choir will be featured, singing “Christmas Day” by Gustav Holst and “E’en So, Lord Jesus, Quickly Come” by Paul Manz.

“(The service is) a natural outgrowth of the Episcopal Church’s musical heritage, as it has been performed through the ages,” Minister of Music Hank Glass said. “We are delighted that our choir can bring such timeless music to Sanibel during this holiest of seasons.”

At the prelude to the service, organist Michael Baldwin will perform at 5:50 p.m. He will play music for the season, including “Noel Joyeux,” Prelude on “Stille Nacht” and French carol “He is Born.”

The Advent celebrations will include a performance by the BIG ARTS Brass Ensemble on Dec. 16 at 6:30 p.m. in the Sanctuary, featuring Christmas music and a carol sing-a-long. St. Michael’s will also participate in the island Luminary festivities on Dec. 7 with a carol-sing, cookies and refreshments.
