The Sanibel Public Library is offering Think Tank hands-on demonstrations for all ages.

IT Manager Danny Hussey and Youth Librarian Deanna Evans recently demonstrated working with electrical circuits using bananas, watermelons, oranges and more as conductors with the Makey Makey circuit demo. The circuits allowed for an electrical flow. The food was connected to a computer to be played like a musical instrument, and bananas become bongos, potatoes become pianos, and so on.

The demo was part of the library’s new Think Tank, which supports STEM initiatives and aims to encourage interest in science, technology, engineering and math among youths. The library is planning additional Think Tank hands-on demonstrations in the coming months for both children and adults.

On Nov. 19-20, library patrons can explore their creative STEM side from 1 to 4 p.m. with ROK Blocks. Young builders can create 3-D construction models with the blocks. No registration required.

The Think Tank is funded with a grant from Hans and Leslie Fleischner and the Sanibel Public Library Foundation; with new STEM-related gift books received from the Sanibel-Captiva Kiwanis Club.

On Nov. 15, witness the sinking of RMS Titanic from 10 a.m. to noon in 10- to 20-minute virtual reality experience. Users will leave with a greater understanding of the historic tragedy that unfolded in 1912. Registration is required due to experience length. Call 239-472-2483 to setup a viewing time.

In addition, “Kindergarten through 12th grade” Thanksgiving-themed food craft will be held on Nov. 20 starting at 3 p.m. Also, the weekly children’s programs will be put on hold from Nov. 19-26.

The library will be closed on Nov. 22 for the Thanksgiving holiday.

Library cards are available to residents of Sanibel and Lee County at no charge.

The Sanibel Public Library is open Mondays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. It is closed on Sundays.
