One dead, three injured, after SUV jumps curb, tumbles over house and lands in swimming pool
An investigation into a car crash that left three people with life-threatening injuries and a passenger dead is continuing.
Cape Coral Police Department officers arrived at a home in the 1600 block of Northwest 25th Lane around midnight Saturday in response to a single-vehicle crash “involving a mailbox, two boats, a house and a vehicle in a pool,” according to the police report.
The vehicle, a Toyota RAV4 SUV, was traveling at a high rate of speed on Wilmington Parkway approaching the Chiquita Boulevard North intersection. The SUV did not stop at the stop sign and continued into a vacant field, the report states.
The vehicle then hit a mailbox, drove onto another vacant lot and then hit a 29-foot boat before becoming airborne. It then hit a gable on the back roof of the house at 1623 N.W. 25th Lane, crashed through the enclosed lanai, and came to rest in the pool, the report states.
There were four occupants in the vehicle, all 20 or younger.
Two were taken to Lee Memorial Hospital via helicopter, one was transported to Lee Memorial via ambulance, and one, the right front seat passenger, was taken to Cape Coral Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Michael Alan Velez, 20, of Cape Coral, suffered fatal injuries as a result of the crash, the report states.
The residents of the house were home during the incident, but were not injured.
CCPD has determined that alcohol or drugs were not a factor in the incident.
