ABWA’s Women in Leadership Speaker Series event rescheduled
The Sanibel Captiva Charter Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association will hold its monthly luncheon and next Women in Leadership Speaker Series on Sept. 27, not Sept. 25.
The guest speakers are Laurie Verme, owner of Pinocchio’s Original Italian Ice Cream and Geppetto’s Beach Foodies, and daughter and General Manager Alice Verme. They will present “The Road to Success is Always Under Construction,” which will review the business and the personal journey that brought Laurie Verme to Sanibel.
“All women fighting for success in the business world have experienced ups and downs,” she said. “I look forward to talking about our story and the most important lesson we have learned along the way: never give up.”
Following success as a McDonald’s franchisee in New York, coupled with a blow from Hurricane Wilma to a hotel she owned on Florida’s east coast, Verme followed her own advice and did not give up. She purchased Pinocchio’s and Geppetto’s as a franchise in 2017 from Donna and Tom Puma.
“Verme’s inspiring story starts with being told she couldn’t succeed in business as a woman,” Gloria Garrett, president of the Sanibel Captiva chapter, said. “Her journey through the business world from New York to both coasts of Florida is loaded with lessons for all of us, women and men alike.”
The chapter usually meets on the fourth Tuesday of the month at the Sundial Beach Resort & Spa, at 1451 Middle Gulf Drive, Sanibel. Networking starts at 11:30 a.m., with lunch and a speaker from noon to 1 p.m. The cost is $20 per person. The meetings are open to the public – men and women alike.
