Coastal Keepers to offer free reusable bags at Bailey’s
Coastal Keepers will hold a BYOB event on Oct. 13 at Bailey’s General Store to reduce the use of disposable plastic bags and educate locals and visitors about the harm plastic bags cause to the environment.
Over 100 billion disposable plastic bags are used annually in the United States, making them one of the most common trash items collected on beaches worldwide. Plastic bags have a short usage time and are rarely recyclable, taking 1,000 years or more to decompose. They pose a threat to wildlife as countless animals become entangled or mistake them for food each year.
One solution to the problem is using reusable bags when shopping, which eliminate the need for disposable plastic bags. On Oct. 13 starting at noon, Coastal Keepers and Bailey’s will partner up to distribute reusable, washable canvas bags for free to the community, while supplies last.
Additional BYOB events are being planned for 2018.
Coastal Keepers operates as an independent branch of the Sanibel Sea School to create and implement conservation initiatives that promote and improve the future of marine resources and coastal heritage. For information, email firstname.lastname@example.org or visit www.sancapcoastalkeepers.org.
