Utility worker who died at construction site Friday identified
A utility worker who died at a construction site last Friday has been identified as Antonio “Tony” M. Pimentel, 53, of Cape Coral.
Cape Coral Police said the incident in still under investigation and that detectives do not believe foul play is involved.
On June 1, Cape Coral Police, fire and EMS were called to the 800 block of Northwest 13th Avenue around noon in response to a man down situation.
Upon arrival, police found Pimentel, unresponsive and submerged in water inside the manhole where he was working, according to the incident report.
A co-worker tried to pull Pimentel from the manhole, but was unsuccessful and became light headed in doing so, the report states.
The Cape Coral Fire Department finally, after more than an hour past the 911 call, were able to relieve Pimentel from underground, and he was pronounced dead at the scene at 1:03 p.m. officials said.
The CCFD also stated that there was limited oxygen where Pimentel was working at the time.
Pimentel was an employee of Southwest Utilities, which could not be reached for comment.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is also investigating and stated it would not provide preliminary or interim information until the investigation is complete.
