Faces on Faith: Ageless body and timeless mind

Deepak Chopra’s book “Ageless Body, Timeless Mind,” published in l993, offers the quantum alternative to growing old. Chopra is an M.D. who served as chief of staff at New England Memorial Hospital and was later appointed to the National Institute of Health’s ad hoc panel on alternative medicine.

He shares the following: “We are not victims of aging, sickness and death. These are parts of the scenery, not the seer who is immune to any form of change.” He goes on: “At a quantum level, physical events in space-time such as heart rate and hormone levels can be affected simply by taking the mind to a reality where time does not have such a hold. Indeed, every cell in the body is nothing but intelligence organized into various layers of visible and invisible patterns.”

For over l00 years Christian Science has offered a unique approach to aging. In her seminal work, “Science and Health With Key to the Scriptures,” Mary Baker Eddy writes: “Life is eternal. We should find this out and begin the demonstration thereof. Man governed by immortal Mind, is always beautiful and grand. Each succeeding year unfolds wisdom, beauty, and holiness. Let us then shape our views of existence into loveliness, freshness, and continuity, rather than into age and blight.”

The King James Version of the Bible reinforces these ideas when Job speaks: “If thou prepare thine heart and stretch out thine hand toward him, thine age shall be clearer than the noonday; thou shalt shine forth, thou shalt be as the morning.” And later when he says: “The Lord shall guide thee continually and satisfy thy soul in drought, and make fat they bones; and thou shalt be like a watered garden, whose waters fail not.”

Neurobiologist Dr. George Bartokis urges us to find work and activities which call on us to remain nimble, adaptive, even visionary, to offset the aging process. Eddy reminds us: “We are all sculptors, working at various forms, moulding and chiseling thought. What is the model before mortal mind? Is it imperfection, joy, sorrow, sin, suffering? Have you accepted the mortal model? Are you reproducing it? Do you not hear from all mankind of the imperfect model? The world is holding it before your gaze continually. The result is that you are liable to follow those lower patterns, limit your life work, and adopt into your experience the angular outline and deformity of matter models. To remedy this, we must first turn our gaze in the right direction and then walk that way. We must form perfect models in thought and look at them continually, or we shall never carve them out in grand and noble lives.” Eddy shares this Christian Science perspective, which is an antidote to the inevitability of aging: “Immortal men and women are models of spiritual sense, drawn by Perfect Mind, and reflecting those higher conceptions of loveliness, which transcend all material sense.”
