Interfaith Shared Scholar Committee announces Shared Scholar

The 2019 Shared Scholar will be the Rev. Dr. John Philip Newell.

Hosted by the Interfaith Shared Scholar Committee, he will present the Shared Scholar Lecture, “Faiths Finding Faith in Each Other” on Jan. 24 at 7 p.m. at Sanibel Congregational United Church of Christ.

A reception and book signing will follow.

Newell will lead the Shared Scholar Seminar on Jan. 25 at 10 a.m. His topic for the seminar is “A Celtic Vision of the Sacred Earth” Lunch will be served following his talk.

Newell is a poet, peacemaker and scholar, acclaimed for his work in the field of Celtic spirituality. In 2011, he received the Contemplative Voices Award from the Shalem Institute in Washington, D.C.

Formerly the warden of Iona Abbey in the Western Isles of Scotland, Newell is now companion theologian for the American Spirituality Center of Casa del Sol at the Ghost Ranch in New Mexico.

An ordained Church of Scotland minister, Newell’s PhD is from the University of Edinburgh. He has authored over 15 books and is the co-founder of Salva Terra: A Vision Towards Earth’s Healing.

The Shared Scholar Committee is sponsored by Bat Yam – Temple of the Islands, Captiva Chapel by the Sea, The Christian Science Church of Sanibel, Saint Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church and SCUCC. The Shared Scholar Lecture Series is also supported by the Leo Rosner Foundation.
