He’s back: Beach welcome goes out to Stet Howland

By Staff | Apr 26, 2018

10,000 views is a lot to soak in over a lifetime, but for legendary drummer Stet Howland, the view from his hospital bed may be one he’ll never forget.

Diagnosed with Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, an aggressive type of Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma in 2017, Howland is now in remission and is back to jamming for crowds behind his drum kit.

Today and Saturday, the Lani Kai Island Resort on Fort Myers Beach will host a “Welcome Home Stet” and 10,000 Views band reunion show to honor the musician who has won his battle with cancer.

Festivities begin at 8 p.m. at Club Ohana nightclub (at Lani Kai Resort), with live music quaking the stage at 9:30.

There is no charge to get into the event, and special guests, drink specials, prizes and more will all be included in this “rock-abration.”

Howland has been a major contributor to charitable events all over Southwest Florida, and is always willing to provide his services for a good cause.

“Stet has been a true advocate for Southwest Florida charities and benefits for decades now. Any time there is some type of benefit or fund-raiser going on for a person in need or a charitable cause, Stet is always one of the first to raise his hand and ask what he can do to help. He’s performed at countless benefits on Fort Myers Beach for so many fellow musicians, members of the community and local causes, I honestly couldn’t even begin to try to take count of them – he’s been there for so many over the years,” said Melissa Schneider, marketing director at the Lani Kai Island Resort.

Howland has been a staple at Club Ohana, performing there on a weekly basis bringing a great vibe and great music to the venue, continued Schneider.

“Stet’s relationship with the Lani Kai has been a long one. We always love when he and his group performs with us. He and his fellow musicians have this electric energy that lights up the room and everyone in it. Most recently, his group 10,000 Views was one of our talented weekly bands who would perform in Club Ohana every Wednesday night. It’s always a fun time when Stet’s on the stage. Between the Lani Kai and Stet, both doing what we can to help local charities, I think that’s helped us bond over the years, knowing we’re doing whatever we can to help our local community.”

Well known for his 15 years as the drummer for W.A.S.P. (over 12 million albums sold), and other music ventures, Howland moved to Fort Myers where eventually he would join forces with Timmy Johnston (lead vocals, guitar, bass) and John Hyatt (guitar, bass, vocals) to drum for the rock band 10,000 Views.

Howland now also tours with the band Metal Church.

Fans around the world showed Howland their support in kind messages on social media platforms once the news broke of his diagnosis, having touched the lives of so many over his 40-year music career.

“We were so absolutely ecstatic when we heard Stet was in remission. He’s always been a fighter – a warrior in so many ways. Now we can add cancer-ass-kicker to that long list of awesomeness!” Schneider said. “As soon as we heard this amazing news, we knew we had to throw a party to celebrate. If anyone knows how to throw a party, it’s Stet Howland, Johnny Hyatt and Timmy Johnston of 10,000 Views and the Lani Kai!”

A party indeed it shall be, as the Lani Kai is excited to welcome friends, family, and fellow rockers.

“We have friends and family coming down from all over the state and country to make this show. We are going to have so many wonderful people in the club that Friday and Saturday night, so many fellow musicians banding around Stet for this welcome-home reunion, mentioning just one or two of the special guests would be impossible. Anyone who’s anyone in the local music industry and beyond, who doesn’t have a gig that Friday or Saturday, is most likely going to be here in Club Ohana with us.”

At the end of the day, it’s a time to celebrate life, and the life of a man who has given so much to the community. The only way to honor this out-of-this-world drummer, is with an out-of-this-world party.

“I hope anyone who’s a friend or a fan of Stet’s music and 10,000 Views – or anyone who just loves some good ol’ rock and roll – will come out and show their support and love for this amazing man and talented musician. It’s going to be an epic Friday and Saturday night!” Schneider said.
