The Sanibel & Captiva Islands Chamber of Commerce welcomed its new Board of Directors Chair Aaron Pruss, who presented the golden gavel to Past-Chair Donna Puma, during the Annual Meeting on April 10 at Sundial Beach Resort & Spa on Sanibel.

Pruss, along with Chair-Elect Mary Bondurant, also presented four prestigious awards – Volunteer of the Year, Citizen of the Year, New Business of the Year and Business Person of the Year.

Pete Bender accepted the Sue Rosica Gray Volunteer of the Year award on behalf of himself and his late wife, Nancy. The couple began their life on Sanibel as vacationers, but fell in the love with the island and became dedicated to serving the community.

Beach Daisy, located in the Periwinkle Place shopping center, was the New Business of the Year. It specializes in effortless lifestyle clothing and accessories, as well as features made in the U.S.A. lines and special finds with quality in mind.

Longtime businessman Mark Anderson, owner of Benchmark General Contractors, was named Business Person of the Year.

Orlene Shimberg was named the Citizen of the Year.

President John Lai gave a year in review, which showed the chamber continues to provide visibility for its business members. He also announced the remodeling of the TripAdvisor No. 1-ranked Chamber Visitor Center. Lai said it will be updated to have better flow for the visitors, plus a few more amenities, while keeping its island style.

Additionally, Lai unveiled the Shop Small campaign that is set to begin in May.

The Chamber hosts social gatherings throughout the year and offers advertising opportunities for its members. The Francis P. Bailey Jr. Visitor Center, named after one of Sanibel’s founding fathers, serves thousands of visitors 365 days a year and relies on dedicated knowledgeable volunteers.
