SCCF to host program about sea turtles
The Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation will offer a “Turtle Tracks” program on May 3 at 10 a.m. at the Nature Center, at 3333 Sanibel Captiva Road, Sanibel. Afterward, the program will be held every Thursday through August, featuring volunteers from SCCF’s sea turtle program. Starting April 15, volunteers began monitoring the beaches every morning of the week on Sanibel and Captiva as sea turtle nesting season kicked off. The volunteers look for nests laid the night before. Each nest is staked, numbered, recorded and monitored until the eggs hatch. They will also be screened to keep predators out. Loggerheads are the most abundant nesters, with green sea turtles nesting every other year.
