Volunteer of the Week
The Community House’s Volunteer of the Week is Ken Burgener. His involvement with the Sanibel venue started while he was helping to make films about the island, which included the renovation at the facility. He can now be found volunteering in variety of positions, including filming the cooking shows at the venue. Burgener’s favorite events are the potluck dinners and annual Kiwanis Spaghetti Dinners. Originally from Indiana, he spent much of his life in South Florida, traveling between Fort Lauderdale and Sanibel with his family. Burgener explained that he had an on-again, off-again relationship with Sanibel for many years, but today he views it as “just a good place to hang out and have a lot of fun.” He is a former Fort Lauderdale park ranger, a filmmaker – his film “Birds Gone Wild” coincided with his involvement in the Audubon Society – and “a crocodile hunter for a couple of weeks.” Asked of his favorite moment so far at The Community House, Burgener said it was creating the time capsule.
