Fort Myers PRCA Rodeo returns to Posse Arena
For the sixth year, the Fort Myers PRCA Rodeo will return to the Lee County Posse Arena for two shows on Friday and Saturday, March 23 and 24, at 7 p.m.
The country’s best cowboys and cowgirls will compete for more than $20,000 in prize money, with plenty of thrills and fun for fans of all ages from the first mutton buster to the last bull rider.
Margo Crowther, who promotes the event, said there will be plenty to keep people occupied, even if they aren’t necessarily rodeo fans.
“We’ll have a bounce house, barbecue, a mechanical bull, vendors, lots of fun, and maybe even a pre-show with the girls at Hooters,” Crowther said.
Of course, there will also be bull riding, bareback, saddle bronc, steer wrestling, barrel racing, calf roping, and team roping for the serious fan.
Among the new attractions will be “Wild Child” Troy Lerwill, a rodeo clown who has won PRCA Comedy Act and Clown of the Year honors multiple times and even does his own stunts on his motorcycle.
With the cancellation of the Cracker Day Rodeo this year because of Hurricane Irma, this will be the only opportunity this year to see a full rodeo performance, and even that was a little iffy at one point.
But thanks to Crowther’s generosity and moving the rodeo back a month, the event and perhaps the arena itself was saved.
“We knew it was going to be a close call to get it done. I donated a horse that we auctioned off to help them raise money to fix the arena,” Crowther said. “We raised more than $10,000 with the money going to the arena. Otherwise we would have regrouped for next year.”
Crowther also had to move the rodeo back because of her rodeo commitments, as she competes in barrel racing throughout the country.
For those who can’t get enough barrel racing, the slack competition is at 10 a.m. on Friday.
Certified Heating & Cooling will be the title sponsor again this year.
Tickets are $20 and $10 for kids. VIP tickets are $75 and include parking, seating food and drinks.
Hooters will sell tickets at reduced prices.
