By Staff | Feb 28, 2018

Services for former Cape Coral City Council member Erick Kuehn will be held Saturday.

The memorial service will begin at 11 a.m. at Cape Cabaret and his family will receive friends immediately following the service for a luncheon and time of fellowship, according to his obituary posted on the website for Mullins Memorial Funeral Home & Cremation Service, which is handling the arrangements.

Kuehn, who was 74, died Monday.

He served on City Council from March 2010 – November 2011 after being appointed from among 17 applicants to fill the District 5 post in the wake of the suspension of the seat’s elected member, Eric Grill.

A City Hall regular and prolific letter writer, Kuehn came to Cape Coral in May 2003 after he retired from a career in insurance sales in Elkhart, Ind. He was an insurance agent for 32 years, following a five-year stint as a German teacher.

He said in a 2010 interview after his appointment that he attended his first Council meeting to speak out against a proposal the city was floating about metered irrigation systems, and it simply piqued his interest on the local political scene.

Kuehn became what he described as a “self appointed community activist,” admitting that Council meetings almost became his obsession.

But it was an obsession that paid off, as he was appointed to Council, partially, on the strength of his attendance at its meetings.

Born in Dunsick, Germany, he also was very active with the German American Club here in Cape Coral.

Survivors include wife , Karen Fox of Cape Coral; four children, Chris Kuehn (Kate) of Plainfield, IN, Stefanie Hickman (James) of Middlebury, IN, Erik Fox (Christy) of Dowagiac, MI and Alison Treder (Todd) of Mishawaka, IN; one brother, Karl Kuehn (Kathy) of St. Charles, MO; eight grandchildren, Emma Kate, Eliza, Christina, Chelse, C.J., Lexi, Emily and Shelly; as well as a nephew, Kurt and two nieces, Erica and Natalie.

Memorial contributions may be made to The American Heart Association, P.O. BOX 840692, Dallas, TX 75284.

Cape Cabaret is at 4725 Vincennes Blvd., Cape Coral.

Flags in the city will be lowered to half-staff in Kuehn’s memory, city officials said.
