Former mayor to address domestic violence at Zonta Club meeting
Marni Sawicki, former mayor of Cape Coral, will be the guest speaker for the Zonta Club of Cape Coral on Tuesday, Feb. 27, at 5:30 p.m.
This event is free and open to the public. All are welcome to join us for this program on Domestic Violence and what we can do to help stop it.
Sawicki was a victim of very public domestic abuse while in office and has recovered through the assistance of ACT. She will be sharing her story and attendees will have an opportunity to decide how to make a difference in their particular base of friends and family. Sawicki is forming a non-profit foundation “that will empower people to speak out, educate themselves and take action against domestic violence.”
Colbie Holdress, another public victim of domestic violence, offers some insight.
“Being strong – with excellent instincts and loyalty and smarts – does not inoculate a person against abuse. It doesn’t prevent her from entering into a relationship with an abuser,” she said.
“Abuse comes in many forms. It is visited on the poor and the rich, the least educated and the most, people with a strong and deep network of friends and family and those without a support structure. And an abusive nature is certainly not something most colleagues are able to spot in a professional setting, especially if they are blinded by a stellar resume and background.”
