Fort Myers police and Collier County deputies recovered $250,000 in electronics stolen from a Lee County Verizon Wireless store, apprehending three men in the process.

The Fort Myers Police Department responded to an alarm at the Verizon Wireless store at 9002 Rolfes Road shortly before 4 a.m. Sunday. Arriving officers discovered the rear door to the business was open and there was damage to the roof. They also found that multiple items such as cell phones, tablets and accessories appeared to have been removed from the shelves and a rear storage room.

“FMPD quickly contacted surrounding agencies to inform them of the burglary and to be on the lookout for suspicious vehicles,” a release from the agency issued Tuesday states.

Shortly after, FMPD received information that the Collier County Sheriff’s Office was in pursuit of a vehicle on southbound I-75 that may have possibly been involved with the burglary, officials said.

“The driver and two occupants eventually fled from the vehicle and were detained by CCSO after an extensive search that included aviation and K-9 units,” the release states.

Osmil Tejeda Hernandez, 40; Manuel Bermudez Viera, 39; and Nicolas Benitez, 43, were arrested by the Collier County Sheriff’s office and transported to the CCSO jail. Hernandez, Viera and Benitez were each charged with burglary with over $1,000 in damage and grand theft of property over $100,000. Hernandez was also charged with fleeing and alluding and resisting arrest, officials said.

Hernandez, Viera and Benitez are from Miami.

FMPD investigators responded to the scene and took custody of the suspects’ vehicle and the stolen items.

“This was an outstanding team effort by the responding FMPD officers and investigators as well as the Collier County Sheriff’s Office for the apprehension of the suspects,” said FMPD Captain Jay Rodriguez in the release.
