Pedestrian struck, killed walking along Pine Island Road in Cape

By Staff | Jan 2, 2018

A pedestrian struck and killed Monday marked Cape Coral’s first traffic fatality for 2018.

Police reported that Maria Laurentina Schreiner, 54, was fatally injured near Southwest Pine Island Road and Nott Road. The accident is under investigation; neither alcohol nor drugs were a factor.

Just before 4 p.m., Schreiner was walking east on Pine Island Road along the bicycle lane with her back to oncoming traffic. As she approached the intersection at Nott, a Ford Ranger pickup traveling east in the outside lane drifted to its right, leaving the outside lane and entering the bike lane.

The front of the truck collided into Schreiner in the bicycle lane, according to police.

Schreiner came to a rest in the southbound lane of Nott, about 164 feet from the area of impact. The Ford continued east, crossing over Nott, before coming to a final stop in a drainage ditch.

Schreiner sustained fatal injuries in the accident.

The truck driver, Brandon Andre Newson, 25, also of the Cape, was not injured.

Police reported that the city recorded 17 traffic fatalities in 2017, of which six were DUI-related.
