Stephen Delon Mullins Jr
Stephen Delon Mullins, Jr., 92, passed away peacefully at Cypress Cove Retirement Community in Ft. Myers Myers, FL on November 24th, 2017.
Steve was born in Atlanta, GA, in 1925. He graduated from Emory University in Atlanta and The University of Georgia Medical School in Augusta, GA. He was certified as an Internist by the American Board of Internal Medicine and achieved recognition as a Fellow. He served in the US Navy during WWII and the US Air Force during the Korean War.
In 1948 he married Margaret Price. The couple moved to Clearwater, FL, in 1954. He practiced Internal Medicine there until 1983. He served as Chief of Staff at Morton Plant Hospital and was instrumental in hiring the first psychiatrist at the facility.
In 1983 the couple moved to St. Vincent Island, in the Caribbean, where he was a Professor of Internal Medicine. Later he held a position as Instructor of Medicine at East Tennessee State University. The couple returned to Florida, moving to Sanibel, where he practiced medicine for a time. He was a member of All Faiths Unitarian Universalist Church in Ft. Myers, FL.
After his retirement Steve became active in civic life, volunteering at: The Drug and Alcohol Treatment Center, The Harry Chapin Food Bank, at the AIDS Clinic and as a literacy volunteer of Lee county. On Sanibel he was a member of the Vegetation Committee and later was hired by the City in protecting plants and animals during construction of a golf course. He served four years on the Planning Commission of Sanibel.
In 2004 Steve and Maggie moved to Cypress Cove Retirement Community in Ft. Myers. He served on various committees of the Residents Council. His abiding passion was growing plants, particularly bromeliads and Florida native plants. This served him well as he became active in the Cypress Cove Native Plant Garden.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Margaret Price, affectionately known as Maggie, and his three children, Susan, Tampa, FL;
David and daughter-in-law Rose Rushbrooke, Christopher and son-in-law Brad Hart, both in Portland, OR, as well as nieces and a nephew in Atlanta, GA.
